We visited Lion Rock in Sri Lanka last February. We had already viewed what to expect from you tube! It looked stunning, and very steep, but certainly not to be missed, having traveled so far from UK to Sri Lanka.
We arrived fairly early in the morning, and our guide took us to the museum first to give us some idea of its history. Unfortunately this turned out to be the wrong decision because once we’d viewed everything in the museum, the humidity And temperatures had risen, and the prospect of climbing 1,200 steps to the top seemed daunting!
With grit determination we began our ascent. You were able to attempt the climb in three sections. The first bit with stone steps of varying condition. The next bit involved the viewing of frescoes painted on the walls of the rock. At this stage it was steep! Certainly worth seeing the frescoes.
The third stage was the scariest! We were at the level of the stone carved lions feet, the legs of the lion also just about recognised, but the head of the lion, now eroded away. The immense size of rather carving was amazing. We decided to do the final section, which were metal steps literally perched into the stone of the Lions Rock. I couldn’t look down through the steps or else I’d have felt dizzy! We carried on up and up along with many other pilgrims. Finally we reached the top! Was it worth it? Yes! The views were stunning. Uninterrupted views of beautiful Sri Lanka. Definitely recommended!
