Reasons for trip

It is billed as a ‘joyous, boisterous romp” and is certainly action-packed. I loved Rufus Hound as Sancho Panza, the well-padded squire to Knight Errant Don Quixote perfectly portrayed by David Threlfall.

Not sure what to expect – a comedy play? A musical? So, it was interesting to see how songs were woven into the overall story. Lots of supporting cast, all great performers, and some fascinating puppetry.

We all loved the horse and donkey! Wooden framework pulled along by an actor complete with hat and ears, there was some amazingly realistic mouth-chewing, teeth baring, slapping lips and neighing. The lion in the cage was such clever puppetry and choreography too.

There were lots of laugh-out-loud moments throughout, though more somber by the final scene of course. This is a wonderful interpretation of the adventures of Don Quixote by the RSC, even if you are not familiar with the story, with lots of additional information included in the beautifully-presented programme. Ticket was £29.50 but the seat was changed at the door so I was able to sit in the stalls instead of up high in the circle.
