Reasons for trip

This is a popular stop on the way to Gjirokastra. It is high in the mountains and reached down a narrow rough road. In Communist times this was an upmarket resort for the elite. Now the springs are a popular tourist destination, accessible to all. They can get very busy in the summer months with restaurants and cabins. At the end of March, we had the valley to ourselves. The downside was that cafes were shut and toilet facilities were very basic…

It is a delightful spot with very clear water and surrounded by deciduous woodland, just coming into leaf. The vegetation was rampant with a lot of pink herb robert and a massive daisy with rhubarb type leaves.

This is limestone country and the spring bubbles up out of a deep pool, giving the water a deep blue colour when seen from a distance. Seen from above, the green vegetation around the edge gives the impression of eye lashes, hence the name.

The water is very cold and you are not supposed to swim or dive in it.

The remains of the concrete tanks used to farm trout in Communist times can be seen along the roadside.
