Reasons for trip

Dolgoch Station on the Talyllyn Railway is in a lovely rural setting surrounded by trees. This features in the Rev Awdry’s railway stories about Skarloey and his railway. Don’t miss the old water tank which can be seen in the illustrations in the book.

The Victoria tourists got off here to visit the series of waterfalls tumbling down a steep gorge in the hillside. It is still as popular today.

There is a signed walk along a well made path to a viewpoint of lower falls. The upper falls can be reached by turning right and crossing the footbridge across the Afon Dolgoch with the railway viaduct below. This is a popular photo point when there is a train due.

The stream burbles over moss covered rocks and is great for the kids who can paddle and throw stones.

A steep footpath with rough steps climbs up the side of the valley to a view point at the top of the lower falls and then continues climbing up to a picnic site at the top of the Upper falls. This is temperate rain forest with ferns, mosses, liverworts, golden saxifrage and marsh marigolds thriving in the damp conditions.

It is an easy walk to the lower falls and back in between trains. The circular walk to the upper falls takes about two hours. Sturdy shoes are recommended as conditions underfoot can be wet.

For those arriving by car, there is a pay and display car park by the Dolgoch Falls Hotel and there is a walk up the valley from there.

The post code of the hotel is LL36 9UW and its grid reference is SH 650046.
