Reasons for trip

About 40 of us pre-booked a guided group tour of the Battlefield. Our guide (Learning Officer) was Jon and he walked us round the battlefield, explaining what had happened and where, the historical background, main proponents and the aftermath of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s defeat.

Jon was excellent and informative and could not have been a better guide. Even though the battle was 1746 Jon evoked the poignancy of the aftermath and the ground surrounding us being covered in the battle dead.

The Visitor Centre is excellent, very well arranged to engage visitors. We found we needed 1.5 hours to do it justice and see all we wanted to see – in addition to the time walking the battlefield. Don’t miss the battle room where moving video scenes on all 4 walls are designed to make you feel in the midst of the battle.

As a group we had pre-booked lunch in a private room off the main restaurant. The food was an excellent buffet – two types of soup, delicious bread, salads, cold roast beef and ham, spicy chicken and poached salmon. There was plenty of it too.

Culloden is the National Trust for Scotland and English National Trust members can get in free.
