Reasons for trip

The Walled Garden on the Roxburghe Estate at Floors Castle is a beautiful little garden, full of colour and scent – a treat for the senses.

We visited the Walled Garden on a trip to Floors Castle paying the entrance fee into the castle and grounds, walking through the woodland walk to the Walled Garden. However, for those that do not have the time to spend visiting the castle and grounds, this little garden can be easily accessed from the road without having to go through Floors Castle. Additionally the castle is closed in Winter Months, the Walled Garden remains open.

There are no admission charges to the Walled Garden which is west of the castle which makes it a great stopping place, somewhere to visit when out and about in Kelso or the Scottish Borders or to take a break for a short while when on a longer journey.

Having spent time on the Roxburghe Estate and Floors Castle this garden is one of my favourite places. Walking along the pathways of tightly packed plants of every variety is like going through aof tunnel colour and scent. Wooden seats allow you to sit for a while in this marvellous sheltered area with such an atmosphere of tranquillity. I can understand why Queen Victoria chose this garden as an area to take tea during her visit in 1867!.

As well as flowers, there are fruit trees, a vegetable plot and herb garden which give a super example of a working Victorian kitchen garden. Produce from this garden is used in the nearby Terrace Café and at Floors Castle.

We visited the adjoining plant centre, then it was on to the Terrace Café where we enjoyed afternoon tea, sitting outside overlooking the Walled Garden.

Our visit provided a lovely break in a busy afternoon.

Parking is outside, just off the road.
