Reasons for trip

The Dome is a former bank with hugely impressive architecture. It is a bar, restaurant and tea rooms. At this time of year, however, the place takes on a magical aura and becomes a tourist attraction in its own right. Extravagant swaggers and Christmas lights festoon the solid stone pillars outside and the red carpet and doorman immediately gives the impression that here is something different. The aroma of Christmas spices permeate the interior in the grand entrance hall. Sweeping staircases lead off left and right to the upstairs tearooms. Afternoon tea here is an institution, with a selection of quality sandwiches (crusts cut off, naturally), scones, clotted cream and delightfully fancy cakes, all waitress served on lovely three tier cake stands. The dining and function rooms off to left and right of the main hall serve more formal meals. The main room however, is breathtaking, with full height trees and hanging lights. I defy anyone to enter and not say "Wow". The central circular bar is the feature of the room and meals or just drinks can be had here. The prices are very moderate for such high class fayre and well worth a visit. Many people linger here just taking in the exceptional atmosphere, and it is a wrench to leave into the cold Edinburgh air.
