Reasons for trip

The Dark Tickle Company is a small firm at the end of the Northern Peninsula specialises in the manufacture of jams, sauces, vinegars, teas, drinks and chocolates from wild berries growing around Newfoundland. The berries are hand picked and during September you can see people out on the hills picking. The Black Tickle web site says they “are carefully processed without additives resulting in a quality product that is both distinctive and delicious”.

There is a good good gift shop attached to the factory selling a range of craft items, books and post cards as well as Dark Tickle Produce. ??We bought small pots of each of the different berry jams to try. We found several to be too sweet for our taste (sugar content is higher than berry content) and were very disappointed by the Bakeapple which tasted of sugar rather than fruit. The Squashberry however was excellent.

The company’s response to me was that ”to be called a jam it is legally required to have a 66% soluble solids level (sugar).” Being used to EU regulations where jams must contain a minimum of 35% fruit and most supermarket jams are around 45% fruit, others may also be disappointed like us.

They do however, sell 100% fruit spreads sweetened with fruit concentrate, so these may be the best buy.
