Reasons for trip

This is the family home of the Sheffield Family. It is a beautiful 18thC brick built house in the Vale of York 8 miles north of York. It is surrounded by flower gardens and woodland.

There is a pleasant way marked walk through woodlands and fields past a pond and ‘temple’. The gardens are beautifully kept with grass, trees and shrubs. The Judas tree was a mass of pink blossom in late May. There are flower beds, a laburnum walk and small vegetable garden. The house is licensed for weddings and there was a marquee in a corner of the gardens.

The house is by guided tour only (booked when you arrive). Group sizes are kept down to 10-12. The guide was informative and funny, bringing the family history to life. The house is very much lived in with family pictures and books scattered around.

The family had originally owned Buckingham House before selling it to one of the George’s. Much of the contents came from there as well as Normanby Hall near Scunthorpe, which was a former home.

This was a very enjoyable visit. The rooms were beautifully furnished with crystal chandeliers, porcelain, pictures.

There is a tea room in the stable block serving soup, sandwiches and home made cakes with a small shop attached.
