Review: St Lucia

Where do I start? The food was very good, buffet breakfasts with a varied choice to suit all, (I had a freshly cooked omelette with my choice of fillings plus fresh various fruit slices every morning). You could book 3, a la carte meals per week, with a choice of 4 restaurants or eat in the main buffet restaurant. The blue marlin was delicious, as were the homemade burgers, (only flavours added no gluten/dairy). I was a bit worried before we went as their website states they don’t specifically cater for special diets, however, I only had to check with the staff and found loads to eat and they had almond and coconut milk. There was an on site cafe too, which made me delicious coconut milk hot chocolates and almond milk lattes. Unfortunately, 99% of the gorgeous looking cakes, I couldn’t have due to my allergies BUT I could have the homemade almond brittle, which was yummy. With the amount of cocktails we drank at the pool bar and the other 4 onsite bars, it is just as well I skipped the cakes! Unlike another caribbean resort I went to before, the coconut milk was just that, well, coconut cream from a tin but not mixed with cows milk which made me ill in Tobago till I found out. So, this holiday I enjoyed making up my own coconut milk cocktails and tried some of those the staff recommended. Happy hour was fun too, which involved drinking shots, yellow one day, red the next with fun staff making it a laugh – hands behind your back and plastic shot glass in your teeth to knock it back one time! There was nightly entertainment, a free pool table and table tennis, in pool volleyball net and one on the beach, plus a game with bean bags. My partner took part in a drumming session which he enjoyed and we watched a steel band and went to a bbq on the beach on our last night. A small wedding took place during our visit, which was nice to see. Free watersports I did were a waterski induction – I didn’t do very well at that but enjoyed the Hobie cat going out 3 days for an hour each time, and also kayaked and went on the banana boat. We went on 2 tours, one on the fastest catamaran on the island, going up the coast, snorkelling, lunch, homemade rum cocktails on the boat, covering ourselves in mud at the volcano and sitting in the hot plunge pool, going in a waterfall and the other tour was to the rainforest where we went up in the gondola with a guide and did a short informative walk, seeing their resident hummingbird at the end for a photo session. We saw all 3 native hummingbirds in the hotel gardens too. We could have done other tours but were too exhausted! Before we went I researched the insects etc and was a bit worried about the mosquitos but we used a deet repellent outside of the resort and the resort itself has a people friendly insecticide fog, twice a week to kill most of the insects, which was reassuring to my partner as he is spider phobic – we didn’t see 1! The staff are so friendly and can’t do enough for you, the natives are also lovely smiley people. Tour guides were full of interesting facts, pointed out lots of things and happy to answer questions. The room, (with a/c), and bed were comfortable and the library had a/c whilst fans were used in other areas to keep you cool. There was a fab a/c gym on site, and a children’s pool and play area. There was free internet in the foyer and library but in the room you would have to pay a daily charge. Yes, we would go back, we were in need of a relaxing holiday and this fitted the bill & was well worth the money. n.b. NO wheelchair access, there are multiple steps in the foyer and into the restaurants etc. Gift shops on site are expensive as you’d expect. I would suggest you take about £100 of US dollars NOT East Caribbean dollars, and a credit card to pay for everything else. This is because US dollars are useable in quite a few places outside the US and are common currency on the island.
