I have often seen the Wilfreda Beehive coaches around the local area and knew they did a good selection of tours with a pick up at Scunthorpe Bus Station. They also offer a ‘home pick up’ which is free on holidays of more than 5 days or more but for a two day mystery tour would cost an extra £20. I decided to ‘test the waters’ by booking a short mystery tour with them.

As usual I booked by phone as I always have questions to ask and like the personal contact. Any questions were answered and i placed a booking. I was allocated an aisle seat and when querying if I could have a window seat was told they tried to fill up seats once a single has been booked (as they can’t split up couples). However there was likely to be spaces on the coach, so I could always move once we had picked everyone up.

This was the first time I’ve encountered this and must admit I did give the company a black mark for it.

Details were sent out a couple of weeks before leaving along with pick up times. These depend on which way we were travelling as south would be earlier than north.

Pick up was 7am from Scunthorpe Bus Station (so we were heading south). This was the first pick up and we made several more on the way to Newark where we were met by a feeder service from the south of the county.

Our first mystery location was Warwick and we had an unplanned trip around Warwick when the coach driver discovered he wasn’t able to use the car park in St Nicholas Park and we ended up in the Castle park.

We had two hours so I decided against the castle which is eye wateringly expensive and needs a lot longer to do it justice. instead I headed to the town centre and went round Market Hall Museum. I thought about St John’s House Museum, but there is now a charge for this and again I decided there wasn’t time to justify a visit. Instead I had a quick scamper round the church for the wonderful Beauchamp Chapel and also walked round St Nicholas Park before heading back to the coach.

Our next stop was Banbury where we had 90 minutes. Having spent a couple of nights there on a previous holiday I just went for a quick walk before finding somewhere in the shade to relax until it was time to return to the coach.

From Banbury, it seemed a long drive to our hotel in Milton Keynes. The Mercure Hotel was a comfortable hotel but let down very badly by the evening meal and there were a lot of complaints from the group. Fortunately breakfast redeemed them.

The next morning we doubled back on ourselves and headed to Oxford where we had 4 hours. On a previous visit I had done the Bodleian Library and the churches. This time I decided to concentrate on the colleges. I visited Balliol College in the centre of Oxford first, followed by next door Trinity College. I finished off at Worcester College on the edge of the city centre this tends to be ignored by the visitors.

It was a long way back north and nearly 8pm by the time we had dropped everyone off on the way back to Scunthorpe. The coach came back past my road end and having a quiet word with the driver he agreed to drop me (and two other people ) off here rather than taking us back into the centre of town, as it was the last stop of the trip. A definite bonus!

The driver was young and very good. He was friendly and chatted away happily to us. He did put on a DVD to while away the long hours on the coach but fortunately it was all easy listening popular music from the 60s and 70s (and definitely suitable for the average age of the people on the rip) It wasn’t too loud either.

They were three interesting stops, although I would have appreciated half and hour longer in Warwick and half an hour less in Banbury. The hotel did let the trip down (and reduced this from 5* to 4*) and the driver was equally concerned about it as we were. It also seemed a bit out of the way for the three places selected for the trip.

So – Overall impressions? Good. It was a comfortable coach and good driver, who was aware of the different needs of the group. Pickups were convenient.

Would I use them again ? Yes.
