During our stay in Madeira we joined a tour to discover the west of the island. The coach took us through the most majestic scenery with our first stop being the Cabo Girao Skywalk. It is the 2nd highest sea cliff in the world and at 580 metres above sea level we walked on to a daunting glass walkway with its incredible views of the coastline and the town of Camara de Lobos far below.

We went on to Ribeira Brava for a coffee break with time to take a look around the village of Sao Vicente and the magnificent interior of the church of Santa Isabel. There were also several souvenir shops with traditional handmade goods to browse, The coach then travelled along the Encumeada Pass with its stunning mountain views.

We continued to Porto Moniz where we stopped for lunch. Here there extraordinary lava rock pools where people were swimming in the azure sea. The Sao Baptista fort housed a small aquarium. The coach then climbed to the Paul da Serra plateau travelling along the Bica da Cana road to visit an interesting banana plantation.

After that there were more impressive views down towards Camara de Lobos fishing village. Here we were treated to a demonstration of the traditional drink of Madeira – the Poncha. It is made from cane sugar brandy, honey and lemon juice. There were also alternatives made with passion fruit, tomato, orange, absinthe or whiskey. Anyway, it was OK!

This tour was well worth it for the overall experience.

Glad you enjoyed the tour. There is certainly more to Madeira than Funchal. We hired a car for the week we were on the island and explored. The West coast is magnificent and we loved it.
