The Old Vine is an independent hotel, restaurant and pub in Winchester, located down a quite side street off Winchester’s High Street and very near the Cathedral.

The grade-two listed building was very quiet on a Wednesday night in March and on entering there appeared to be a restaurant on the left-hand side and bar on the right. After a filling lunch we only wanted a snack and I chose a twice cooked cheese souffle which arrived with a small dressed salad, two slices of ciabatta bread and a small jug of a hollandaise-type sauce. It was very good with strong blue cheese flavours and crunchy nuts. The other dish, a smoked haddock fishcake had a runny egg in the middle and was accompanied by a salad and a small dish or curried mayonnaise. We also had a bottle of white wine and the bill came to £37.

Apart from a few other couples, the place was very quiet, which was a shame as both the service and food were so good. All that was lacking was a bit more ambience.
