This is the first time (and last!) we have used Eurostar as we generally fly. It is easy enough to book and download tickets, and we also booked the hotel through them at the same time (see review of Dutch Design Artemis Hotel) so were actually looking forward to our trip and staying overnight in London on first and last nights.

Unlike at the airport, you cannot go through gates to security at St Pancras until one hour before, so it is no good trying earlier as you cannot scan the boarding pass. By the time you go back to go through gates, there is a huge backlog of people waiting to go through all the security machines plus 3 more to check passports. The security checks are like in the airport (except no liquids limit) so remove belts, watches, jackets etc and heave luggage onto the belt to also go through the machine. We only had hand luggage, but others had great big suitcases they would have already left at baggage drop in an airport.

Passport control was odd, manual check first, then queue again for machine to scan passport, then wait to go through next bit for facial recognition. Boarding was quite straightforward with seats already allocated and carriage stops clearly marked – although we only had 10 minutes left to board once we got through customs control. Our carriage was comfortable, but cold with air conditioning, and toilets did not work on adjoining two carriages.

Coming back was worse. It was ordinary service train from Amsterdam to Brussels. We then joined a queue of hundreds of people waiting to get through security again. We only had five minutes to sprint along the platform to board, and we know there were so many people behind us that some must have missed it altogether. Clearly a never-to-be- repeated experience.
