This Spring my wife and I travelled with Saga on a fortnight’s holiday to Georgia and Armenia. The main thrust of the tour was to visit some of the many religious sites in these two countries. Each country has its own distinct Church, not to mention language and script, We flew via Kiev to Tblisi, the Georgian capital, travelled around the two countries by coach and then flew back via Kiev from the Armenian capital Yerevan. We flew with Ukrainian Airlines who we felt would not score particularly high in any customer satisfaction survey. Georgia, like Armenia, is a mountainous, rugged place. Both countries can be often extremely beautiful, although they do suffer from the blight and debris of Soviet rule.Derelict collective farms, huge abandoned factories and the like abound. The roads are not wonderful and the Georgian Military Highway up to the Russian border in particular had a number of our fellow travellers reaching for the laudanum. Many, many hairpin bends, no armco and frenetic minibus drivers. Having said that our coach drivers – we had two separate coaches for each country – and our tour guides were excellent. Our hotels varied from the perfectly adequate to the splendid and the local goods were inexpensive. We would recommend this tour albeit with the caveat that there are long coach journeys over rough roads. The religious sites are fascinating and often in spectacular locations, the food is delicious and plentiful and the locals are warm and welcoming.
