In 2016 I visited Vietnam on a cruise and decided I would like to return on a more in depth holiday.

After a lot of research I decided to go with Mercury Travel on their Vietnam and Cambodia Odyssey which used trains and coaches in Vietnam.

Being a solo traveller I paid the single supplement for the overnight accommodation in hotels and overnight trains.

When we arrived in Hanoi at 6am the first morning and were transferred to our hotel it was not the one on our itinerary! Also they did not have enough rooms for all of us!! After 2 hours of standing in the heat and not being offered any water, rooms were found. Not a good start to the holiday.

Thereafter the holiday was on the whole good with a few minor problems until the tickets were given out for the first night train, where I was advised that I would have to share a compartment! I pointed out that I had paid the single supplement, but was told it did not apply to the trains!! This I had not been told before booking or travelling. There were 5 solo travellers and 1 had to share with people who were not on our tour and in 1 case in a different train carriage!!

I emailed Mercury when we arrived at the next hotel and was told it did not include the trains. I reminded them that the trains were in the box of accommodation which I had paid the single supplement for and that no where in the brochure does it say that it did not include the trains!

The Mercury representative came to visit me in Vietnam and assured me that the new brochure would have this in, it has not. I told him that solo travellers should be given this information before booking thus giving them the opportunity to not go ahead if this was a problem.

The rest of the holiday was good except when going by speed boat for 5 hours from Vietnam to Cambodia the ‘guy’ on the boat charged each person an extra $3 for the Cambodian visa. I pointed this out to him but he said we had to pay it !! So he made around $200 out of our party.

On my return I wrote in depth to Mercury who came up with all manner of excuses but eventually in protest they did refund the single supplement for the 2 night trains.

So if you are thinking of going on this tour with Mercury ask all the questions before you book.

Their attitude left a lot to be desired and I will never travel with them again.

Apart from the problem with the single supplement and having to pay an additional $3 for Cambodian visa, was it a worthwhile trip? Did Mercury provide an English speaking guide to sort out problems as they arose on the trip?
