Don’t let the name fool you. The Bag Lady is a delightful little deli on the northeast corner of Pall Mall and Maitland Streets just north of downtown. There is parking in front of the building and on the street – all free. It reminds me of The Tudor Rose Tea Rooms in Port Sunlight Village on the Wirral in that it is full of memorabilia, most of which I recognize from my childhood. There are not a lot of tables and it is only open for breakfast and lunch, opening at 7:30 am and closing at 3:00 pm, but the food is all freshly made and delicious.

The only problem for me was they do not have decaffeinated coffee so I had water with my food. I’ll have to go earlier in the day to have a coffee. The water is by the door in a large container and you help yourself to a vintage glass of various sizes and designs. The condiment containers on the tables are also reminiscent of the 60s as are the tables and chairs. One of them reminds me of the one in my great uncle’s cottage in the Eastern Townships in Quebec.

I have been to this eatery twice in the last couple of months; once with a friend and once with my aunt. The most recent visit my aunt had the Yukon gold potato and garlic soup and I had a fruit cup and a cinnamon bun. The bun wasn’t as gooey as I like them but was still tasty and the fruit was a good mix and very nicely presented. The prices are reasonable as well; mine was under $10 since I just had water. No credit cards taken; cash and debit only.
