Arrived in the bay of Pulau Komodo on Black Watch early on 12th March 2018. After tendering ashore we were met by the wardens of the National Park who organised us into our tour groups. They gave us a locally made sunhat and a bottle of water and we were ready. The tour was held up by a dragon who was sulking under one of the houses near the landing waiting for scraps of food. A warden soon got rid of him by chasing him with a stick which forked into two at the end. The walk along the designated path was easy to walk on and our guide very informed on the dragons and the other flora and fauna. Apart from dragons we saw both a male and female buck – juicy eating for the dragons. If they cannot kill their prey at once they track the animal for days until it dies from the saliva injected into it by the dragon bite. The saliva contains over 60 deadly bacteria. the tour continued through the forest and there were opportunities to see the dragons on the way to a water hole. Our tour of about 20 people had three men with the forked sticks to keep us in a group and protect us against an attack. At the water hole we saw 4 dragons 3 watching us warily while the 4th came around the back of us. A very watchful warden kept an eye on him. We were told not to make any sudden movements. Then back to the area around the landing stage where cool drinks and a very welcome cold flannel was provided. We ended going along the usual path through all the vendors and did some retail therapy. Usual fridge magnets and T-shirts we for sale but also some locally carved (Yes) dragons and jewellery. A very good trip lasting just under two hours.
