My wife and I are previous travellers with SAGA, and chose this holiday because it was somewhere we’d never been to before. Checkin at Gatwick was a little chaotic, with no SAGA rep to be seen, but managed easily enough. Arrival at Split was much better, with the SAGA reps very much in evidence, and very quickly were in the safe hands of one Sanja Klesic (more about her later). Our first stay was at the Hotel President in Solin, a locally rated 5*, very grand outwardly, but a little faded within. Comfortable enough large rooms, with stunning views – waiter service in the dining room, interesting versions of Western dishes, but a bit short on the veg..! Breakfasts were nice enough, but never any variation during the 4-day stay. The local tours were interesting enough, and gave an insight to historical events during ancient and more recent times. The SAGA lounge wasn’t the most elegant or user friendly, mainly hard seating with few comfortable chairs or sofas – the usual drinks were available in the 12-hour free bar, although some fellow ancients thought that the spirits on offer were diluted…

The next seven days were on the island of Brec were the most pleasant of all, and just a 45 minute ferry trip away – we were based at the Hotel Kaktus, in the Supetrus Resort. The complex was stunningly located close to the beach, with views across the straits to the mainland, and with almost every activity available for all ages. Meals were buffet style, with plenty of variety and choice – comfortable rooms, airconditioning, balcony, excellent SAGA lounge with plenty of easy chairs and sofas. Included and additional tours were all good, varied, and most interesting. I had cause to make use of the island’s medical facilities whilst here, where my European Health Insurance Card proved most useful, and the local hospital was quick and efficient, if a trifle noisy…

Finally, the last 3 days were spent at the massive 400-room Blue Sun Hotel, Alga – although we had opted for the seaview room at extra cost (small and poky), and we had the advantage of glorious sunshine, the hotel’s airconditioning was turned off because, as we were told, the temperature in the evening fell to 11 – 14 degrees so aircon wasn’t needed..! The fact that as 80+ year olds, a post luncheon power nap proved difficult in a 25* concrete cell didn’t seem to matter to the management….

Perhaps the best thing on our tour was our SAGA rep, one Sanja Klesic – she really cared about her charges during the tour, was always available seemingly at whatever time of the day or night, and seemed to know everyone’s name without having to consult her clipboard. Full of information about almost everything, and nothing was too much for her group, and we can safely say that she made this holiday for us – and more personally, the time and effort made on our behalf for my small medical problem was invaluable. I just hope that SAGA keep hold of this lady, for the benefit of future travellers.

Overall, the holiday was a great experience (although we’d like to avoid the Blue Sun Hotel in future) – Croatia is a beautiful country, the locals most friendly, and the whole holiday was, for us, value for money..!

Nice to know. I hear consistently good things about Croatia. It is on my list of places I want to get to.
