Many of the streets and businesses in Stratford, Ontario have literary related names. The Cafe Balzac is no exception. Its motto: “Alas, poor Yorick! We brew him well.” Balzac’s is a chain in southern Ontario with a number of locations in Toronto, although it all started in Stratford in 1996. The business recently had an infusion from two Dragons from “The Dragon’s Den” TV show. The chain strives to provide locally sourced and organic products (as much as possible) in a European atmosphere. The Stratford Balzac is located on Ontario Street, right in the thick of things; walking distance to all the theatres, the river and the shops.

On a recent visit to Stratford, my sister and I stopped in here for an after show coffee break. We had been to see “The Virgin Trial” ) and were on the Pumpkin Trail. Sadly Balzac isn’t one of the businesses on the trail, but we stopped in anyway. There is a little patio out front but we sat inside at the window bar and watched the passersby.

I enjoyed a ginger biscuit and my sister indulged in a very tart lemon tart – as they should be. My latte was good too. We’ve been here before and it’s always a pleasure.
