We visited Alaro, in Majorca’s Tramuntana Mountains, for the first time this September. We were delighted with this small, quiet town, which we found a perfect spot to get away from it all. Tourism has largely bypassed Alaro (you can’t buy a postcard of the town), and there are no big hotels. Ours, the Petit Hotel Alaro, was an ancient house converted to a boutique hotel with just seven guest rooms and a small swimming pool – perfect for us. Because of its location, most visitors to Alaro are there to walk or cycle in the mountains, and there are plenty of attractive routes in the surrounding countryside. Bicycles can be hired, and the Town Hall has a useful (free) English guidebook with information about the town and suggested walks. At night and on market days, life centres around the town square, where there is a good choice of bars, cafes and restaurants. Not a vibrant or busy spot, but wonderful for a very quiet break in Majorca.
