Too hot to tour the zoo by day? Do it by night!
Just returned from a delightful couple of weeks in Hong Kong and Singapore, and the heat was quite significant for me, so we did a lot of sights in the evening when it was cooler, and this was one such trip. The safari consists of an open train tour of the zoo after dark (it goes dark at about 7pm every day in Singapore like clockwork, it’s on the equator). You get to see nocturnal animals, and in fact it’s almost surreal – you get very close to some impressive animals like elephants, lions, tigers etc – they are separated from you for security, of course, but in very unobtrusive ways, so it feels like you are not bothering them, and they are not “enclosed”. You can also walk along some paths in the zoo, among the smaller animals, such as wallabies etc. Don’t miss the Creatures of the Night show, which was very entertaining, and there’s the opportunity for children and adults to participate on stage. The trainers know their stuff and the animals are fantastic to see close up. If you are into the smaller exotic animals, such as hyena, otters, bears, etc this is a joy. We were taken by local guests to the zoo so I am afraid I do not have details of the price and how to get there by public transport, but I can imagine it was reasonably priced (I found Singapore to be surprisingly affordable, especially as everything was of high quality) and taxis are very reasonable. Food and drink are available on site and although it was busy when we went, we were able to see and do everything in about 3 hours including a 30 minute show.
