My wife and I visited The Commodore while staying with our daughter and son-in-law in Helensburgh. We’ve eaten there before and like it mainly because of its setting – right on the Helensburgh ‘seafront’ , facing the Clyde estuary and the entrance to Gare Loch. On a nice day it’s great to sit outside, from where you may even be lucky enough to catch sight of one of our nuclear submarines on its way to/from the Fasslane base!

It’s a Vintage Inn, so you may have had a meal in one of their pubs before, and it’s very much what you would expect from a chain of restaurants. We had fortunately booked as it was a Saturday night, and therefore very busy. I like the range/choice of beers they always have on there, and they seem to change every time we go. For those who know about these things, the Timothy Taylor’s Landlord was excellent! The wine list seemed fairly standard, with prices you would expect.

From the Mains menu, I chose the slow-cooked lamb shank, while my wife picked a Caesar salad with added salmon. While it’s not Michelin-star cooking, it was a very good pub meal which we both enjoyed. The service, however, was a little slow, which might be explained by it having been a Saturday night.

There is a Travelodge attached to the pub so you can also stay overnight, which I would recommend should you ever find yourselves in that neck of the woods!
