We were delighted to receive a pair of tickets from Silver Travel Advisor to the Destinations show in Manchester. Although we have been avid cruisers, mainly in the Med and Caribbean we have been looking to cast our net wider and this show was the perfect opportunity to explore some of the options available. With companies offering destinations from America to Zambia there is something for everything. Almost as diverse at the destinations are the ways to visit them. In addition to tours by coach, rail, sea and air you could also arrange trips on motorcycles or classic cars.

Silver Travel Advisor partners were represented and we spent some time talking to the girls from Collette, particularly about their tours to China, one of the destinations on our wish list. Having visited the USA on a number of occasions, mainly Florida to start or end a cruise we spent some time at the Visit USA Pavilion. With so many US states sending representatives, along with Airlines, Amtrak Vacations and USA tour operators all centred in the one location it was easy to gather information on some of the states and sights we would like to visit elsewhere in the country.

Regular readers of the forum will know that I have a round trip planned using the Amtrak network. Whilst I would happily make the trip there is no way that Linda would be keen to do so. However, Cruise America, the leading RV rental company had brought one of their rental vehicles with them and she was sufficiently impressed that a tour using an RV is a distinct possibility.

In addition to tour companies and tourist offices from overseas various UK tourist areas were also represented, there were various stands from suppliers of travel goods and services. Wanderlust Travel Magazine had an exhibition winning entries in their Travel Photo of the Year competition. Until our visit I had been quite pleased with some of my own photographs, none of them got even close to matching the quality of the images displayed!

We spent the morning visiting the various stands of interest. In the afternoon we went to the “Meet the Experts Theatre” to listen to talks on the “Northern Lights”, which was so popular it standing room only! This was fallowed by a presentation from Cruise America on travelling in an RV, a guide for beginners, which was of particular interest, and finally Oceania Cruises. Over the four days the range of topics presented are as diverse as the destinations on offer. If food is your thing there is also a Food and Travel stage providing presentations on various types of cuisine.

We spent an enjoyable and informative day. If you want to talk with an exhibitor in greater detail then plan to be there in the latter part of the afternoon. By 3:00pm most of the crowds had gone and even the most popular stands were clear.

I used to go to the Destinations show every year in London when I lived in the area. I'm too far really now to consider it but, of you can go,it really is worth it
