My son lives in Hong Kong and I have been fortunate to visit him for the last 20 years so know Hong Kong very well. When I inform friends who are travelling through Hong Kong to other destinations I try to get them to stopover for at least a week. There are so many places to visit , including many islands, and if you enjoy walking there some challenging walks in the mountains.

Recently the Hong Kong government have introduced an Elder Octopus card that is available to visitors as well as locals, this means you can travel on most forms of transport for 2$ HK , any distance, and the famous Star ferry for free!

There are many guides available from the visitor centers including ‘Great Outdoors Hong Kong’ which are free.

There are many hotels to stay in Hong Kong on all budgets on both the Hong Kong island and Kowloon.

I am able to offer any suggestions for members who wish to make there own arrangements.

Thank you, that is very helpful. It is always intresting to get a 'real' visitor's perspective rather than the website!

Before you visit Hong Kong go to the web site to see what to see. I already mentioned some of the first things to do on arrival and many attractions are free . I would recommend the train up to THE PEAK for views across the harbour ,and also the walk around the Peak. Lantau Island for a cable car ride to visit the Big Buddha. Kowloon for markets and the famous Ladies and Jade markets, also at 8 pm for the Symphony of Lights. Take a ferry out to the many islands to enjoy walking and if you like fish then there many restaurants. There are many shops in Hong Kong , there is no VAT in Hong Kong . Eating in Hong Kong is an experience , there are so many to choose from and according to your budget you eat at reasonable prices or at very expensive restaurants. I have mentioned that if you do your homework that I always do before visiting a new place it is easy to get around, also they speak English another advantage.
I hope that helps your comment, please inform me for any more ideas

You’ve whetted our appetites. What things would you recommend for fellow Silver Travellers to do in Hong Kong? How easy is Hong Kong to do ‘under your own steam’ for a first time visitor? Which of the islands do you recommend?
