For our Golden Wedding we treated ourselves to a trip to Australia and New Zealand – a definite improvement on our honeymoon in a caravan in rainy UK!

I was apprehensive about flying so far, so we splashed out on business class. We flew with Qantas airlines and were impressed by the journey. Business class meant a fast check in and fast track through security, then we went to the lounge where we had comfortable chairs, magazines and as much food and wine as we could manage. The flight was delayed by several hours, so this was very much appreciated. On the plane, we were greeted by name, offered champagne and settled down for a long flight. The seats were side by side instead of top to toe as on some airlines. The arm rest between the seats had a pop up TV and tray. The reclining seats had so many buttons it was difficult to figure out which was which. But basically the seat converted to a flat bed, and you could adjust the length. The food was excellent, the best food of the entire holiday. It was tasty and served on proper crockery, not plastic. A copious supply of wine ensured some sleep!

It was a long journey though. First to Dubai, where we had to get off and go through checking in and security before we got on again and another delay due to a damaged plane door when reloading! The same coming back, except for an extra change as we flew from New Zealand, to Australia, then Dubai before arriving back at Heathrow. The airline was very generous with inflight items – a smart plastic toilet bag with toothpaste, toothbrush and various creams; travel socks; pyjamas for the overnight stretches. Every time we changed plane they were replaced, so between us we had 10 rather nice toilet bags – just right for the grandchildren! I’m still wearing the socks and pyjamas too!

We went through so many time zones I lost track of time and was very jet lagged, both on arrival and return. The only problem with business class is that it spoils you for economy – I’d be tempted to fly long distance again if I could afford to!

What a wonderful way to spend your Glden Wedding - and congratulations on those 50 years.

Business class does spoil you though, doesn't it!
