We flew from Gatwick South to Crete with Thomas Cook and I decided to book a lounge for the first time using Silver Travel Advisor’s partner ‘Holiday Extras’ which gave me a 10% discount at No. 1 Lounge (normally £28 per person).

The lounge is available up to 3 hours before your flight and I ensured we were there at bang on 12.30pm to get VFM. It was slightly different to normal business class lounges in that alcoholic drinks had to be ordered at the bar which was good as it retained a degree of control. Tea, coffee, juices and water were all self-service. The menu was good with self-service dishes and dishes made to order.

Before 11am you could yourself to croissants, cereal, yoghurt and fruit salad but order eggs benedict or Florentine, beans on toast or toast.

After 11am there were bar snacks (nuts and olives), fresh fruit and a fabulously tempting display of caramel shortbread, slices of lemon drizzle cake and chocolate brownies. It was well presented and constantly refreshed by the staff who did an excellent job at clearing tables. Made to order were lemon chicken tagine, spinach and ricotta shells, Caesar salad (with or without chicken), superfood salad mezze, cheese plate and presumably for later flights, a cream tea.

My Caeser salad was delicious and Roy’s all day bacon roll was crammed full of lean bacon and served with a small cream pot of sauce (brown or tomato and checked on ordering). I followed this with a cheese plate of water biscuits, chutney, an English Cheddar and unusual French blue brie. Instead of the advertised grapes there were slices of crisp green apple.

There was a library quiet area only available to guests over 12 and a small lounge with TV showing BBC world. Loos were plentiful (even for women) and spotlessly clean.

Free wi-fi was available, a fairly small selection of newspapers and magazines were available, the sauvignon blanc was good and there was a variety of seating ranging from sofas and low tables, to dining tables and chairs and banquette style seating.

This was a great experience and one I’d definitely use again.

Totally agree about the loos Marpau, as I hate having to queue.

ESW - hope Marpau's comments have definitely sold this experience to you now!

I agree with all your comments we used this lounge too and the toilets were spotless and cleaned regularly during our visit worth the money for this alone. This lounge made the perfect start to our holiday

Thank you. I'll bear that in mind when I tackle Gatwick next spring - the next major step after cracking London underground!

There is indeed one at Gatwick North and the website above has the details for it along with other regional airports.

This sounds a very civilised start to the holiday.

Do you know if there is there something similar at the north terminal?
