I travelled from N Ireland with a local company named Acetours. We spent a week based in Portoroz on the Slovenian coast. Our hotel was the Apollo, part of the Lifeclass group. Excellent hotel with fabulous spa facilities right in the heart of the resort and close to all amenities. Set on a slight hill which may be a problem for those with walking difficulties. Rooms are generously proportioned with large modern bathrooms with large walk in shower. Toiletries provided but you need to bring your own conditioner. Free use of the room safe is a nice touch. There are no tea making facilities in the bedrooms however.

Portoroz is a smallish resort set back and along a beach promenade. The usual smattering of shops and cafes can be found within easy reach. It’s a pleasant place to be based but a week here would be too long.

Fortunately our tour brought us further afield. A walk along the promenade, approx 30 mins at steady pace brings you to beautiful and picturesque Piran. A lovely town with a Harbour, a large square and lots of little cobbled streets with shops and cafes. Climb up to the castle or the church tower, some148 steps for panoramic views of the town and coast. Stunning!

No visit to Slovenia would be complete without a tour of the capital Lubijana. A large university town with an imposing castle, magnificent bridges and quaint cafes and shops lined along both sides of the river. In some ways reminding me of Amsterdam. For those with a few dollars to spend there is an abundance of designer stores in the modern end of town. A beautiful city to explore by foot or river.

A few hours away by coach brings you to Lake Bled for a contrasting experience. A small town mostly centred around the lake which is lovely to stroll around and watch the fishermen and take in the peace of the tranquil surroundings. Take a boat trip out to the tiny island in the middle of the lake.

From here it is possible to take a drive through the Triglav mountains for some breathtaking scenery and pay a visit to Krasnagora at the foothills.

Slovenia is a land of contrasts offering both spectacular mountain scenery , historic city life and also the cosmopolitan atmosphere of a seaside resort all within easy reach.

I found the people to be friendly and the cost of living quite reasonable. A cup of coffee was approx 1.5 euros and a glass of local wine the same. A small local beer about 2euros. I loved the atmosphere of the country and found it to be one of the cleanest I had visited.
