I was lucky enough to win a day trip to Guernsey in a recent Silver Travellers Guide to Gatwick Airport competition. It was my first visit to Guernsey and the only downside of the day was having to get up before the sun had risen and trek across London to get to the airport for 8 am. However that was a small price to pay for the delightful day that followed!

There was one other prizewinner, Carol, and I met her and Jennie from Silver Travel Advisor at the Your Service Centre in Gatwick South Terminal. I have to admit that I have never, in many years of travelling through Gatwick, ever noticed the Service Centre before. We were greeted by Faye and Emma and they ran through what the Centre actually does. Maybe the reason I hadn’t noticed it before was because I am quite an experienced traveller but Your Service Centre is wonderful at dealing with passenger’s queries ranging from major problems like having forgotten to get a visa to minor queries like where is the nearest toilet! (Although why anyone would queue up to ask such a question when the airport is adequately signed is baffling!) We even had a photographer to take a few snaps of us. I felt very celebrity like!

We were joined by Clive from Aurigny airlines and were taken through Premium Security to the No.1 Lounge, a little oasis of calm in a hectic airport. We enjoyed breakfast and drinks (no alcohol, it was a bit early for all of us!) and at 10am we boarded our 45 seat plane to Guernsey. A lovely comfortable plane and a good flight that only took 55 minutes. Unfortunately the weather was a bit grey and drizzly so the views of Guernsey from the air were a bit obscured by clouds.

We were met by a minibus and Rob, our driver/guide gave us a really interesting tour of the South and West coasts. We saw the hilltop gun batteries, Fort Grey and the enchanting Little Chapel where the walls are covered with broken pieces of bright pottery. We also visited a nearby Silversmiths where there was an assortment of jewellery and tourist gifts available. We were driven through Saint Peter Port (the Capital) and arrived for lunch at the St Pierre Park Hotel. We were met by the lovely Bori and Suzanne with a champagne cocktail for each of us and then given a tour of this lovely Hotel which features a new spa section and a golf course. We had a wide choice of dishes for lunch and then, sadly, had to head back to the airport for our flight home.

I was very impressed with Guernsey. I have previously been to Jersey and felt it was very much like Devon or Cornwall. Guernsey also has that rugged coastal look but has more of a “village” feel to it. I would liken it to a more rugged Isle of Wight and I would definitely like to go back and spend more time there. If, or when, I do I will definitely be travelling by Aurigny Airlines (although I would really like to know why the seat numbers in their planes jump from Row 6 to Row 14 with no numbers in between?). I would also like to spend more time at the St Pierre Park Hotel, the thought of using their outdoor Jacuzzi after a day walking around the Island does appeal very much!).

The whole day was lovely and this was mainly down to everyone involved in arranging our prize. This includes Faye who was our first port of contact, to Emma who accompanied us on the trip and made us laugh about her fear of flying and Clive who was so knowledgeable about the Airline (even if he did pretend that we should have got visas for our trip!) to Jenny who obviously put this whole day together. It was a wonderful prize to win and I have put another place on my bucket list to visit again in the future!

For more information about Aurigny Airlines, which flies from England to the Channel Isles, go to www.aurigny.com.

The St Pierre Park Hotel is one of the Handpicked Hotels Group, and amongst many great amenities, has a gorgeous spa – tranquil, overlooking the fabulous gardens and is absolutely state-of-the-art.

As the other prize winner I can't add more to this review as it is very comprehensive but have written something on the Forum. The new SilverTravellers' Guide to Gatwick is a very useful document with lots of information about the services. Just to add that all involved in putting this day together were brilliant, so welcoming and friendly and they were so kind to invite my twin brother to the lunch and allowed me to stay with him for a few days as I had not seen him for some time. Thank you SilverTraveller and Aurigny!! Guernsey is a must if you haven't been and the nearby islands like Sark, Herm and Alderney just as unique and interesting to visit.

No, it seems the Guernsey tomato industry has gone very much downhill!

It sounds as if you had a wonderful day and managed to pack a lot into it.

I last visited Guernsey when I was about 12 and remember all the island was covered with greenhouses when seen from the plane. Are there still as many?
