This is something you just have to do if in New York. I think we all remember that dreadful day and in fact I had been in the Twin Towers only a week before which made it all the more frightening. The museum has been done very well. You can book in advance but we just turned up and only had to queue for a short while and, needless to say, the security was thorough. You don’t necessarily learn much you didn’t know before but it brings a personal touch with family stories and belongings. There is plenty of seating throughout.

They haven’t actually built on the sites of the towers, on those sites are two memorial pools and, around the edges, the names of all those who died are etched. Very moving. And, despite being in such a busy city, very peaceful. Lots of trees and seating close by.

I too was in New York in June of this year with my husband and we also visited the the 9/11 Memorial as you did.
This was our second visit to the site but our first one was made before the new Memorial was built and opened. The original museum was housed in one of the buildings spared by the events and for us, at that time, there was a rawness that wasn't so evident this time.
I am glad I saw the original museum as I liked the way that it had been quickly put together whereas the new one a little bit too sophisticated.
Nonetheless, the Memorial is a place not to be missed on a visit to New York which makes you reflect upon the events of 9/11 and how it affected so many people.
