Hornsby has been running buses in Scunthorpe for over a hundred years. It is a very well regarded family business with a good reputation with well maintained and clean buses. You can see through the windows (unlike Stagecoach who also runs buses in Scunthorpe). They run a range of day tours and short breaks throughout the year.

I don’t drive so after husband’s death, I am dependent on public transport or tours for holidays. This was my first nervous foray into the world of escorted tours. I picked up the 2016 brochure for their short tours on the service bus into Scunthorpe before Christmas and sat and read it. It offered a wide choice of tours from Scotland to Kent. I was attracted by the mystery tours, but wanted to check where I might end up as a three day shopping experience didn’t appeal.

I called in at the office and my mind was set at rest. Last year trips had gone to Mold in North Wales and Last Drop Village on the edge of the Lancashire Pennines. I booked a seat on the mystery tour departing at the start of March.

Bookings can be made over the internet, in person at the Hornsby’s office, by telephone or at a local travel agent. I used the telephone this time, which was quick and easy. It was answered promptly and staff are good. If they say they will ring you back they do. They are unusual as they do not charge extra for use of a credit card when paying for their holidays. I booked a seat at the front of the coach and was told they have a policy of not booking anyone next to a single passenger unless the coach is very full. At least I wouldn’t get the coach Lothario or the coach bore next to me. Once allocated, this seat would be mine for the duration of the trip.

Staff are excellent, helpful and efficient. There is no pressure and they answered all my many questions in detail. They have a range of pick up points in Scunthorpe, Ashby and surrounding villages. There was a slight surcharge for a single room on this holiday although there are some tours where there is none. I was also able to specify room with a shower as well as a bath. Initial paper work was sent out very quickly. The final paperwork came out a couple of weeks before the holiday. I was impressed.

They have a reward card and points accumulated can be used against further holidays. I accumulated £6 on this trip which I used to book a day trip later in the year.

It was a comfortable coach and the driver was good, attentive to our needs and quickly established a friendly atmosphere in the group. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and have booked a couple more trips. I was very much the ‘new girl’ as many people had been going on holiday with Hornsby’s for years.

Since writing this review, I've had another two holidays with Hornsbys and have been on several day trips with them. All have been excellent and I am increasingly impressed by them. Staff now recognise me and know my preferences without having to explain. All the bus drivers go out of their way to make it a good trip and to help passengers enjoy themselves.
