Having got UK passports for my 2 dogs I took them abroad for the first time in May 2015. We stayed for a week in Normandy, and we used Eurotunnel. It could not have been easier. On the way out there are no checks to be done. Eurotunnel provide a clean, secure dog area just near the car parks at the main Terminal building, in which you can give the dogs a run (on or off lead). The crossing is just 35 minutes and the dogs are with you in the car so they are quite happy. Whilst in France we did need to visit a vet to get tapeworm tablets administered and their passports stamped to certify this. On returning to the UK at the French Eurotunnel end you have to visit the “pet centre” before you check in your car. The Pet Centre is well sign-posted, just follow the large paw print signs. Here you need to have their passports inspected and their micro-chips scanned. The scanner is given to you to scan your own dogs so that they are not made anxious, and the micro-chips scan very easily. This French end process takes about a quarter of an hour so you do need to factor this additional time into your journey. At the French Eurotunnel site they too have a dog exercise area but we did not use it as we had stopped near to Calais for lunch less than a hour beforehand.
That’s it, all very easy and efficient and everyone very friendly. Would certainly recommend and will be using this service again on future holidays.
