The Five Bells pub and hotel, part of the Vintage Inns family of establishments, near Aylesbury.

This is a traditional old pub with lots of beams, alcoves and low ceilings serving a regular menu plus a Saturday Special. We both had seared salmon but each served differently. Leslie had his served with calamari and mussels, me with creamy lemon sauce and crushed lemon-scented baby potatoes. Beautifully presented, it was excellent quality and a reasonable price at £11.95 each.

The menu has a wide range of dishes to choose from including several vegetarian dishes, though I am not sure about the ‘savoury Eccles cake’. The Sunday roast is served until 9.30pm which is useful to know. It was very busy on the Saturday evening we were there, including many regulars so it has a good name as a pub and a restaurant. The pies looked great – apparently Wednesday is Vintage Pie day! – and the desserts were substantial. As a B&B, the room was clean and comfy with pine furniture, plenty of tea and coffee and a shower that worked well. Worth a visit if you are in the area, especially near to Hartwell House hotel and spa.
