We had visited this amazing village where "The Prisoner" TV series was filmed a few years ago. Now we were back this time with a friend who we had regaled for the last couple of days with "what delights, what astonishing views, what fabulous extravagant cultivated gardens, what fantastic architecture she was about to sample!" She was not disappointed! The Mediterranean atmosphere of this Italian make believe village was quite extraordinary. Lavish villas in beautiful pastel colours basked in the morning sunshine as we wandered down quaint little streets and round every bend and street corner was yet another jaw dropping vista or stunning flower display. This was no cheap tacky tourist attraction, this was as close as you can get to some outrageously expensive Italian village. Pools shimmered with their water lilies and bougainvillea draped over sculpted balconies, nude statues looked down haughtily at the camera clicking tourists whilst vistas of the sea and beach were occasionally glimpsed through terraced gardens. Stone steps leading who knows where invited closer inspection sometimes leading one to a welcome cafe where cappuccino and little cakes were a welcome break. This we all agreed was a day out to remember, an outing to savor and some glorious photographs to look back on at a later date.

Portmeirion is a photographers delight. You have to walk around and use your eyes as the vistas framed by buildings and vegetation change all the time. It is a joy and delight.

It is also worth visiting Plas Brondanw Gardens. Clough Williams-Ellis lived in the house and used the same architectural techniques in the garden as he did at Portmeirion only usig trees to frame the vistas.
