Foxton Locks is a "staircase" of 10 locks set in the beautiful countryside of South Leicestershire. There is a long stay car park at the top of the lock & you can set off for a very pleasant walk along the canal & down the flight of locks. The people who are moving their narrow boats up or down the locks seem happy to chat & one even took the camera so we could get in the photo together. Its quite an impressive piece of engineering really & really gives you a feel of when the pace of life was slower. There is some wildlife to admire in the side ponds at the locks & we went for a lovely walk along the canal down to the marina, with spring lambs frolicking in the fields alongside the water. I know from the book I had that there are many more interesting walks you can do around here. There is a museum on hand if you want a bit of history & a couple of places for refreshment, including the very nice Foxton Locks Inn. There are also some displays along the locks, so you can appreciate some of the history of the place without going inside the museum. I think you can go for rides down the canal in the summer, but there didn't seem to be anything about when we were there. I believe there are plans to restore the inclined plane, which will make this an even more interesting site. It was a bit of a dull day for us but dry for most of the time, although the rain eventually drove us into the Foxton Locks Inn, but we still had a really good time & I'd love to come again on a nicer day & I'm sure it would be even nicer. Tip: If you are traveling with someone who would struggle with the steepness of the lock staircase, park at the top car park. After a walk down the staircase &/or along the canal (which is mainly flat) you can go & get the car & bring it to the lower (short stay) car park by the Foxton Locks Inn to pick them up.

I've now visited Neptune's Staircase in Scotland, just outside of Fort William. Although the canal width of the Caledonian is much wider & thus impressive in the size & amount out water it must shift, Foxton is more pleasing on the eye. Foxton is also busier & easier to chat to the boat owners/users.
