The 'Watercress Line' offers you a trip into old England from the comfort of a railway carriage. A carefree day out for all ages – whether it's a trip down memory lane or an opportunity to learn about how we used to travel – with the sounds and sights of magnificent steam engines.

The Watercress Line used to carry watercress – from the famous beds at Alresford – until the 1970s. You can board either at Alton or Alresford (both in Hampshire) and buy a ticket that gives you freedom to travel on the trains all day long. There are 10 miles of track to enjoy!

You will see the peaceful Hampshire countryside passing by and then, if you wish, alight at small, welcoming stations along the way with their flowers and topiary.

Enthusiastic volunteers have brought this service back to life, which offers an unrivalled opportunity to experience steam travel at its best.

You can combine this trip with a visit to Jane Austen's house at Chawton – just a couple of miles from Alton – if you wish.
