We spent a week in Edinburgh in July, it was probably the hottest week of the year, and while we wanted to see as much of the city as we could, it was proving to be hard work as there are some very steep hills there and we were flagging in the heat. We noticed that there were a number of open top bus tours operating from near Waverley Station and that seemed to be the answer to our problem. We chose Mac Tours as it seemed to be aimed at older people rather than ones with young children. Our tickets cost £13 each and were valid for 24 hours. We could use them to do the full tour of Edinburgh or we could choose to hop on and off where we wanted to. Each bus had a tour guide who did a running commentary as we drove through the streets. Our first guide was only young but was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and she entertained us with anecdotes about people and places in the city. Her knowledge of the statue of the Duke of Wellingtons horse was both funny and interesting. On the tour we saw Greyfriars Bobby, the castle, Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile and much more. We did the whole tour, but then got off at some of the places we wanted to visit. We certainly enjoyed seeing the city this way, the tickets were a reasonable price, you could also get a discount on entrance to many of the city's attractions if you produced your ticket too.

I enjoy the bus tours as you can see so much more from the top deck of a bus.

It's useful to know about discounted entry with your ticket. That could mount up to quite a saving.
