Arriving in Amsterdam from Barcelona following a wonderful 12 day cruise, my wife and I were met by Schiphol support services as we were both registered disabled. A motorised buggy took us very speedily across the airport, a long journey that we could never have accomplished. We were deposited outside the gate for our onward journey home to Edinburgh flying within 2 hours. The gate was a corridor between a moving walkway and a set of glass partitions, no seats at all and the floor was littered with a dozen passengers. We could see sets of seats beyond the x ray equipment on the other side of the partition. No cafe or shops close by, we were stranded! About 20 minutes before the gates were due to open staff arrived and opened the door but not to let us in and process us but to sit in the seats and chat! When they finally began the x ray security and we got one of the few seats it was painfully obvious that the waiting space was insufficient for a full flight which this was. Packed like overheated sardines we were eventually shuttled through by checking boarding passes and passports to another tiny waiting area without seats. When they announced priority boarding including those with mobility problems they allowed the whole crowd to a free-for-all surge. The whole debacle, with the exception of the buggy driver, felt we were treated like livestock and expected we would have been dipped in disinfectant and our ears fitted with metal clips if they could have been bothered? Traumatic and painful and one airport I won't repeat!
