Heaven is four weeks in a campervan touring New Zealand. I’m still dreaming about our adventures. Volcanoes, beautiful Bay of Islands, the scary geysers at Rotorua, the Maori meeting house at Waitangi , “Ninety Mile beach”, Tane Mahuta, the two thousand year old Kauri tree, Sky Tower, the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, all make North Island a place of great contrasts. At Kaikoura in South Island we had the amazing luck of seeing three whales and dolphins galore. We had our first local crayfish that evening with Hokey Pokey ice cream to follow. A few days near Christchurch doing touristy things like visiting Museums, the cathedral and Botanic Gardens was followed by an amazing day driving through the Arthur Pass. The scenery was fantastic and we stopped for many photos and in Arthur Village green Keas swooped down to try and pinch our sandwiches. We drove for miles and only saw the odd campervan. That evening in our beachside campervan site we cooked fish on the campsite barbecue and drank local wine whilst listening to the ocean.

After two days we travelled on to Franz Joseph and experienced the most exciting helicopter trip over the Franz Joseph and the Fox glaciers and landed in the snow field above. Then the rains started and part of the road was swept away. After a few hours one lane was repaired and we made the frightening journey across a sheer drop then on to Wanaka. The route was described as the most beautiful in South Island but we couldn’t see much for rain and mist. The sun blessed our few days in Wanaka. We saw the endangered Buff Weka on an island reserve; we ate delicious Lamb Shanks and also cooked our own steaks on the camp barbeque that we shared with people from all over the world. Next was Queenstown where we returned the campervan, had a few days in a hotel, an amazing trip to Milford Sound and then my husband’s sister collected us so we could experience Christmas at their home on the bay at Riverton. What a holiday!
