We usually have annual travel insurance to cover Europe rather than worldwide and have tried several insurers – last year it was the Post Office that gave a good deal.

But when I was 65 – my husband is 68 – the rates jumped. Add to that my husband's pre-existing conditions (on long-term medication for angina etc) it was ludicrously expensive. Spoke with our Barclays Bank branch and found that if you have a current account, you can have a family insurance cover for Europe that is ongoing until you reach 70. The monthly fee is £8.50 for both of us and does not need to go through the renewing process every year unless there is a new medical condition.

Important to note: with pre-existing medical conditions, we first spoke on the phone (at Barclays) with the insurance risk team. They said the premium for my husband would be £400+ because of the risk! Needless to say we declined their generous offer! But we then spoke to Barclays insurance health team, described all the medication etc, and they said that as it was all controlled it was not a problem and the standard cover is valid until 2015 when he is 70. This is the best deal we have found anywhere.
