If you haven't tried Voyages Jules Verne (VJV) holidays, do give them a go. After a gap of 6 years, I have just taken my 5th trip, called Impressions of the Seine, and was as delighted as ever. It will appeal to people on their own (as I was), couples or families, all of which were represented. One of the great things about VJV is that they sometimes offer No Single Supplement holidays; there aren't many, so you need to contact them early. Full board was also included as well as most drinks.

It started for me with Eurostar London, which I always find exciting, but others travelled from other locations. Transfer from Paris Gare du Nord was smooth, with the representative there making sure everyone on her list had arrived safely. A short taxi drive to the smart ship, MS France, was equally efficient, with some of the ship's crew ready to help with baggage prior to checking in on board and being given our cabin numbers. My single, en suite bedroom was small.

This holiday started on July 23rd and ended a week later, on the 30th. The captain introduced all the staff on the first evening over a Welcome cocktail before dinner – nice touch, I thought. The food throughout was very good, and particularly so on the last evening when the Gala Dinner was foie gras, quail fillets and Baked Alaska. By then, those of us on our own had made friends – I've always found other VJV travellers to be interesting and fun.

For me, the two particularly special parts of the ship's itinerary were the absolutely fabulous Claude Monet house and gardens – not forgetting the famous water lilies – and Rouen, where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. Well worth staying up for is the Rouen Cathedral of Light show that, this year, takes place from June to September 21st. This is music, sound and light played on the cathedral and depicts beautifully part of the cathedral's history and some of the impressionists' work.

This Impressions of the Seine cruise was impressive.

It sounds like it's a very well organised company. The transfers are really important especially if you're on your own, and it sounds like they ticked all the boxes for you!

Certainly did, Vicki. It was really good. Worth looking at them online or their hard copy brochure. (Sounds as though I'm getting commission! - which I'm definitely not!).
