We booked over the phone and had excellent service from the start. The deal was for 8 nights but we extended it to 10. It was a fantastic experience and so professionally organised – From the book-in at Manchester the whole trip went like clockwork with such courteous and professional staff. On arrival at Columbo airport we were met by the company representative and our driver/guide (Presard) who was absolutely wonderful – he was prepared to stop whenever we wanted for photos and to explain to us anything regarding Sri Lanka. Our first stop was at Dambulla – the hotel Heritance Kandalama. This hotel is right by the lake and in a conservation area. It is built into the mountainside and right in the jungle, with all sorts of birds and wildlife in the grounds. We were greeted with hot towels and a fruit juice drink by the infinity pool overlooking the lake. Our driver collected us the next day to take us to Sigirya Rock fortress and a jeep safari in the afternoon at Minneriya National Park with herds of wild elephants – fantastic. The following day we were driven to Dambulla town which we explored then on to the Rock caves temple which was amazing.Driven on to a spice garden at Matale and then on to Kandy for 2 nights at Earls Regency hotel – again a fantastic setting and service. Our driver took us to the Temple of the Tooth Relic in the evening – the place was again an amazing experience. Next day we went to the Botanical gardens, a gemstone factory, tour of Kandy town, and an evening cultural show of Kandy dancing. We had a traditional Sri Lankan meal at the Devon restaurant in the evening – very tasty. Our next day entailed a drive to the coast, stopping off at a tea factory at the Geragama tea estate near Kandy and also stopped off at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. We arrived at the Heritance Ahungalla later in the afternoon – a superb hotel overlooking the Indian Ocean. Our next day was a tour of Galle – the town, lighthouse and fortress. The three hotels were superb – definitely 5 star and the staff at each one were again professional, polite, helpful and really friendly. The organised tours couldn’t have been better with the car and driver punctual and well organised yet still a very relaxed – all credit to Emirates, Aitken Spence (the tour company in Sri lanka) and our driver for making it such a superb trip. It was definitely one of our best holidays.
