When my sons family asked me to fly out and join them in Spain for a weeks holiday I wasn't sure what to expect. They had hired a private villa – Finca Bascella in Alozaina. My son, a busy police officer, had wanted a quiet place to get away from it all and the villa certainly provided that! He and his family had driven down to the Costa del Sol but I preferred not to spend 2 days trapped in the back of the car with Andre (aged 9) repeating "Are we there yet?" continually! So I booked a cheap Ryanair flight to Malaga and they picked me up at the airport. It was about a 45 minute drive to the villa. The owners (ex-pats Wally and Jackie) had moved into a smaller accommodation on the site and although we rarely saw them they were nearby if we had any problems.

Finca Bascella is a 3 bedroom hacienda type home with a small swimming pool and fantastic views of the Sierra de Las Nieves mountains. An African themed conservatory area, once we opened the glass doors each morning offered a wonderful vista in which to eat our meals. Palm trees shade the garden and there is a patio for barbecues and a picnic area with table and chairs. This really is completely away from it all. To get to the villa, one has to drive (carefully) down a dirt track which has a vertical drop on one side! The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom and there is another bathroom between the two other twin bedrooms. There is also a third toilet closet in the hall.

At night the pool lights can be set to be coloured or take on a flashing disco effect. The villa is obviously a much loved house for its owners (who originate from Somerset) and it has a cosy, lived in feel with lots of personal knick knacks around. Being "away from it all" did not mean we had to miss out on entertainment. A satellite dish enabled us to have more TV channels than we receive at home! There was also good Wi-Fi access throughout the house (especially welcomed by 21 year old Jordan who had numerous IT devices with him!). One of the bedrooms had numerous board games and toys, books and DVD's which kept Andre amused when we could manage to get him out of the pool.

There are numerous walks in the area and lots of towns nearby worth a visit (Malaga, Ronda to name just two). So if you are looking for a home away from home in the Spanish mountains Villa Bascella may be just right for you. We couldn't fault it at all and we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.
