We travelled by train from Sussex, changing at Reading and caught the no. 2 bus from almost opposite the station right up to the hotel. Received a very warm welcome at Reception but were relieved not to arrive at the same time as any other visitors as a notice said that no more than 3 people must travel in the lift!

When we booked the stay the "bargain rate" rooms had all been taken so we paid a little extra for a room, with balcony, overlooking the gardens. It was excellent – a large room, large bathroom (with shower over bath) – and clean and comfy. No shortage of hot water, and good pressure. We were on the second floor. An old building so plenty of turns and stairs but nice wide carpeted corridors. I'm afraid I didn't notice how accessible it was generally for disabled guests.

The meals were fine – usual Shearings selection, though I was disappointed that cheese and biscuits is no longer on the general menu. You can have it but only by paying extra. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Coffee with a chocolate on the saucer (apart from a couple of evenings when someone naughty must have taken chocs from several saucers!) was there to help yourself to after the meal and there were several little lounges in which to relax. Some chatted but several, like us, were playing cards or Scrabble.

All in all, a very pleasant stay.
