Auberge des Iles guest house is situated at Avenue Jugnauth, Palma, Quatre Bornes, Mauritius. It is an impeccably clean and modern family run small guest hotel that will delight the discerning traveller intent on discovering this paradise island, staying in a safe and friendly environment, whilst avoiding the tourist bustle.

Geographical situation: 5 mins walk to reach local catholic church, next door to a Cheshire Home. Cheap convenience shops and bus stops a few minutes walk away. Only 15mins by bus to reach the renowned West Coast beach resort of Flic en Flac for boat or fishing trips in the lagoon and quality restaurants. Showers on the beach.

In the other direction buses take 20 minutes to the market town and regional administrative center of Quatre Bornes, with its busy open air market, banks, including a Barclays Bank, shops, including indoor airconditioned supermarket and many restaurants.

Quatre Bornes is halfway to the charming capital of Port Louis. Express airconditioned buses run constantly between Quatre Bornes and the capital along an express dual carriageway. from the bus terminus in Port Louis one can get buses to up market Grand Baie in the North and all parts of the island.

Rooms are modern, built to a high standard in 2010 with 5 doubles (3 en suite) and a further 2 doubles as a family suite with own bathroom, hallway and separate entrance off the common kitchen and living areas. Great for two couples travelling together. Plenty of hot solar powered water.

Windows are insect screened and all rooms have individual remote controlled aircon units. Rooms are large with wardrobes, desk and new bedding, divan bases and orthopedic matresses. in a tasteful decor. Approx 10ft by 12/15 ft bedrooms with fully tiled walk-in shower/wet room, washbasin and WC through sliding door to one side.

This is an ideal location for independent minded travellers not looking for close proximity to a tourist strip hubbub at night. As a halfway village between two large towns, Palma is a restful and pleasant environment far from the noise of town, yet well served by cheap and frequent, fast local transport within 150 yds of the hotel.

We are a mature couple in our 50s and 60s and appreciated the calm and the fresh breezes away from the coast. The Auberge is the last building in the road and is surrounded by cropped fields and open countryside.

The location was perfect for us as it is elevated from the coastal plain and a more comfortable climate. 15 minutes by bus to the beach for about 50p was a good trade off. Singles will enjoy staying with no extra penalty for single occupancy as price is per room not per person. A spare foldaway bed could be put in the larger of the two family suite rooms, for a child if required.

Seasoned travellers who like to avoid the fuss and bother of tourist infested hotel locations will enjoy staying as guests of the charming Ramsaha family, a young at heart middle-aged couple with a respectful and respectable teenaged son and daughter.

We recommend this location as ideal for newly married mature couples, who like to be well treated as special guests, with privacy in spades. We were made to feel like visiting members of their family and nothing was too much trouble.

The comfortable and modern air-conditioned accommodation is constructed above the family's home with access to a roof terrace for star gazing at night or far stretching views across open agricultural land to the charming view of Trois Mammel and Corps de Garde mountains and the sea about eight miles away. A large covered terrace off the dining area can be used for Al Fresco meals if preferred. A nice place to sip a glass of wine or take a cool beer before supper.

Meals in the morning and evening are included and lunch can be available if required. family cooking was tasty and delightful, but this is not a restaurant with an a la carte menu. Mrs Ramsaha has done a professional cookery course and can do speciality deserts; but this is authentic local food without fancy frills and everything is made fresh from scratch, naturally. There is a kitchen which can be used by guests for self catering if required.

We ate in on most evenings and saved a fortune. Vegetarians can be easily catered for. Breakfasts consisted of fresh local tropical fruits, fruit juice, cold hams, tomatoes, boiled eggs, cheese, fresh bread from the local bakery and tea or coffee. They always asked if we wanted more. There is a pawpaw tree in the garden and banana, lychee and mango tree groves close by, as well as vast fields of sugar cane.

It was extremely comfortable and far from the town mosques, a boon if you are not a fan of incessant wailing calls to prayer on Friday evenings. We were awakened the first few days by a local cock crowing but got used to it. Fascinating bright yellow birds weave hanging nests in trees on a vacant lot opposite.

The Auberge is set in a small private garden and you can hang washing on the line if you wish. Informality rules.

You can get free advice and help in planning your stay, with up to date local knowledge for the best value excursions, fishing, diving, car hire, golf (the listed tourist sites in their blog will surely guide you) and even emergency currency exchange.

Payment is in cash, usually on arrival, in euros, dollars, or pounds sterling as well as Mauritian Rupees. any adjustments for extras as you go or on departure. No card payments, so no booking deposits.

Other features included: Personalized service. Building equipped with 24hr CCTV security cameras in public areas, smoke detectors and emergency fire alarms. Night grill encloses entrance at night. Only 5 rooms, basically for an intimate family atmosphere. Respect for a guest's independence but willingness to facilitate the guest's stay and ensure a magical experience in Mauritius.

Above all, reasonable rates ensured incredible value for money.
