We booked a 4 week holiday in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hawaii with BA, who were very helpful(I particularly recommend a very pleasant lady called Rose) .Our transatlantic flights were with BA but the section to/from Hawaii were with American Airlines. Their check-in system at LAX was very slow and laborious as we could not check in online or print off luggage tags or print out boarding passes at the airport because our flights had been booked in UK.But no-one had told us this and there were no signs telling us this at the airport. The flight was 6 hours, even with a tail wind, and as we had left our hotel at 6a.m. to allow 3 hours for check-in, we looked forward to our lunch, or even a snack with a meal later on. But NO hot meals are served on AA at all, and a snack such as cheese crackers and 5 grapes cost about 12 dollars. We WERE offered soft drinks, and could obtain more by walking up to the galley to ask for more. But I had thought we were flying with a scheduled airline with normal services. Instead, I felt we were on a cheapy deal with a low cost carrier.(If we had paid Ryan Air or Easy jet prices, I would not have felt so aggrieved!).So, please allow 4 hours at LAX if you fly with AA, and take a picnic or buy a hot meal before boarding!! I have not flown with United or. any other American airline for several years, so please check in case this new policy is common in USA.
