We used KLM to fly us to Amsterdam for a city break. What a revelation! Good prices when booking direct with KLM online with no added extras. Price includes choice of seat, a generous 12kg of hand luggage each spread across two bags each (no need to stuff handbags and camera bags into carry on bags), online check in and complimentary drinks and snacks. Roomy seats – my rucksack fitted under the seat in front of me – and charming cabin crew. Clear and helpful announcements from the pilot.

The only negative was the slight panic we had on landing. As the flight had been delayed by 30 minutes, the crew warned that several passengers transferring at Schiphol would need to move very quickly to catch their ongoing flight. Not being in any rush, we decided to sit back and let the others off first, so it was a huge shock when we got up to find the locker above us completely empty! My husband's bright red high-viz rucksack had disappeared. I instantly began making a mental list of its contents and the implications if they were not found whilst my husband rushed up and down the plane checking seats and overhead lockers. We eventually found it in a locker right at the front of the plane. Whether the crew had moved it or someone had taken it in error before realising their mistake, we don't know.

Returning through Schiphol was not quite as smooth. I'd printed off our boarding cards at the hotel but the gate had changed and we walked a considerable distance in the opposite direction before we realised. To be fair, KLM had sent me a text t this effect, but it had arrived after we had set off for the airport and I had not checked my phone since. At Schiphol, each gate has its own security check which seemed like a good idea until faced with a queue comprising an entire planeload removing watches, jackets, belts, emptying pockets.

As a footnote, checking in bags into the hold would only have cost £12.50 each if booked in advance. Also, when I checked in on line they charmingly informed me they had reserved extra leg length seats, if I wanted them, at a very reasonable price. I was not seduced. However, for a short break it was a comfortable, good value flight without the added tyranny of the baggage reclaim.
