Review: Malaysia Airlines
A very pleasant experience

This was our first experience of Malaysia Airlines (MA) but as they flew direct to Kuala Lumpur (KL) & operated the internal flights to & within Borneo, we thought we'd give them a try. Booking was mainly completed by our Travel Agent & it was a nice change that they were able to book our seats at the time of booking to ensure we were seated together. We travelled Economy but wanted to change to extra leg room seats for the return to London (we had some nice seats on the upper deck for the outbound flight). MA's web site does not allow you to manage your booking online but this service is under development. Sadly it took me two attempts to get through on the phone, the first attempt I was in the queue for so long I gave up & tried later in the day. When I got through they were helpful & efficient & the change was made for a £70 charge. Check in can be done online, which was straight forward. At Heathrow the baggage drop was friendly & efficient with virtually no queuing. MA operate the A380-800 to KL. This is a monster of a plane, a full double decker carrying 494 passengers, with a wingspan of nearly 262 feet (80m). Boarding was OK but we were left standing on the air bridge for quite a while before they opened the door of the plane for us to board. Seating was completed & we pushed back bang on time for our 12 hour 22 min flight. Seats we comfortable, with good leg room & the seat pivoted when you reclined to give a comfortable position. The iPad sized touch screen in the back of the seat in front gave you access to a plethora of entertainment. Latest films, TV, music, games, a massive choice. We watched Argo that had picked up the best film Oscar the night before. There was also a USB socket, I assume to charge your devices. And so to airline food. Proving the old adage that you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time, my wife & I chose the same dish but had differing opinions. I thought the chicken risotto was one of the better airline meals I've had, my wife wasn't impressed & left half of hers…..Oh well! Supper achieved approval from both of us. Cabin staff were well groomed, polite, helpful & efficient throughout the flight. This was a night flight & the usual pack with eye masks, ear plugs etc. wasn't supplied (we had our own anyway) but they did supply you with a little snack pack in case you couldn't make it to breakfast (which of course would be supper allowing for the time zone change + 8 hours). A final touch for this outbound flight was to show a video which walked you from the plane, to immigration, baggage reclaim, customs & exit. Very helpful & stopped any confusion of where to go when you exited the aircraft. MA has recently joined the One World Alliance with the likes of BA & American Airlines. That means you can collect miles or enjoy other benefits depending on your status with the other Alliance partner. Our flight from London & all our internal flights came with a generous 30kg checked baggage allowance. Where we had multiple flights to reach a destination the bags were efficiently checked through to our final destination. Most of the internal flights were completed on 737-800s, apart from the last smaller plane that was a small prop plane. The flights of 90 mins or more had a very nice hot meal served. Whilst the shorter flights came with a drink & peanuts. All of the planes looked relatively modern, a couple looked brand new. The stand out thing for me was the attitude of the staff. They were so helpful & friendly other airlines could certainly do with offering service to this standard. The Staff on the KL to London segment were particularly delightful. Overall on the many flights we took on this trip we were very satisfied & apart from the few niggles mentioned above, enjoyed our experience with MA. We would certainly have no hesitation about flying with them again.
