Miles and smiles is the name of Turkish Airlines ‘frequent flyer’ programme and so, when I took my first ever flight with them last week I was pleased to find myself smiling. First because, shortly after take-off, a stewardess came round with a tray of Turkish Delight – and then when they came round again with a printed menu (remember when that used to happen on all airlines?). On the subject of menus – when you do your online booking there’s a drop-down menu choice for ‘special’ meals, with a very comprehensive choice including: Non-vegetarian (beef-free) Hindu meal; Low fat, Low salt, Low calorie, and Low lactose meals; Seafood meal; Kosher meal; Moslem meal; Vegetarian Raw Meal, Vegetarian Jain meal, Vegetarian Lacto-ovo meal, Vegetarian Oriental meal, and Vegetarian Vegan meal. Oh yes – and a meal that’s called ‘bland’ meal, which I couldn’t resist trying on my final flight – and it turned out to be a nice piece of poached codfish, with sauted vegetables and parsley potatoes. Apologies if I’ve missed any! I flew Birmingham–Istanbul then Istanbul–Baku, returning later that week in the reverse order, so four flights in a week using this airline that was voted ‘best in Europe’ in 2011 and 2012. All four ‘planes, in economy class, had a seat pitch of 31” which, although better than Ryanair or easyJet, is still towards the lower end for economy (though comparison sites suggest that the majority of airlines have a similar pitch). Service onboard the first flight was a bit slow – for some reason only one of the crew took the trolley round, though there were three of them to cover the economy cabin – with the result that the trolley was in the passage for most of our 4-hour flight. The second (2-hour) outbound flight seemed similarly slow – but both of the return flights later that week were the opposite, with efficient service throughout.
