We flew Air Malta from Heathrow to Malta. You can't check in on the internet for Heathrow flights yet, so we joined the queue of holiday makers, many with trolleys full of diving gear. Staff were efficient, pleasant and helpful.

There was priority boarding for those with young children or people needing longer to board. Waving my stick I reckon I qualify for this. It gives you time to stow cabin luggage and sit down before the hordes arrive.

We flew in the plane that has been newly painted with a picture of Valetta to publicise Valetta's bid to become a European City of Culture in 2018. The plain was beginning to show its age a bit. Crew were pleasant and we were given a hot meal. Nothing exciting but it was included in the price. Water or fruit juice were offered with tea or coffee to follow. Alcoholic drinks are extra.

There is plenty of leg room between the seats. Michael at 6'4" had plenty of room for his knees.

The only inflight entertainment is a small computer screen with map and progress update with altitude, outside temperature, and time to destination, so grab a free copy of the Malta Times as you board for something to read.

We flew round Malta before landing. The airport takes up a large part of the south of the island. We walked down the steps (which makes you feel really important and you want to wave to the non-existent crowd) and across the tarmac to the arrivals hall. Immigration was swift and it wasn't long to wait for the bags.

Leaving Malta we were at the airport early and it was about 30minutes wait before we were given a number for booking in for the Heathrow flight. The desks were dealing with Hamburg and Frankfurt. I did wonder if we joined the queue whether we would be able to check in for Heathrow.

Security was fast and there is a small selection of shops beyond. Don't get excited. There is little space at the gates so you are not given a gate until 20minutes or so before the aircraft is due to board. A bus takes you to the aircraft where there is the usual scrum to board. If you have a seat at the back, then head for the steps at the back of the plane.

Again it was an unexciting flight with a basic hot meal. Cabin crew were fine. Even though we were late leaving Malta we were still at Heathrow on time.

I don't know how Air Malta compares pricewise with other carriers. It is more expensive than Ryan Air who also fly to Malta, but then you don't get thumped for all the extras charged by Ryan Air. (Passengers about to board were being reminded thy were only allowed one carryon and that included a handbag. Anyone who had been to the duty free shop had to report to the desk before boarding.)

It is a basic but perfectly acceptable flight and we'd be happy to use it again.

You have written a few good reviews about Air Malta. I think I have travelled with Air Malta once. I was quite happy with it.
